If you turn on your news about now you will learn that Interstate 35W bridge over the Mississippi River which carries more than 100,000 cars a day has collapsed in its entirety during the tail end of rush hour. All fire-rescue departments in the Twin Cities metropolitan area are being asked to go to the scene. National Guard helicopters on the scene. Emergency helicopters evacuating injured. News helicopters asked to leave the scene. Cell phone system is overwhelmed and customers are being asked to not use their cell phones if possible. This is about 15 minutes by car from our house. We can hear sirens of vehicles rushing to scene. This occurred at 6:01 pm.
Friends of Mariah and Dylan and Rachael Hayford, Doug O’Leary’s mother-in-lawm drove across that bridge minutes before it collapsed. Hennepin County Medical Center is at Code Orange as are some other medical centers in the Twin Cities.
This span is 67 feet above the water level and the bridge has collapsed completely into the river.
